Keeping Your Plants At Their Best All Year Round

One of the main advantages of adding a greenhouse to your garden is that you can keep your plants protected from frost, heavy rain and other weather conditions all year round. However, there are other steps that you need to take in order to ensure that your plants are kept at their best throughout the year.

Providing your plants with just the right amount of heat, moisture and light will enable them to remain at their best. If you leave your greenhouse unheated, then this will cause damage to your plants and prevent them from thriving. Add extra heat or light as required and if you need extra insulation, then add bubble wrap to your greenhouse. This provides your plants with a little extra heat and easily controls light during darker months. This method will also save you from spending extra on lighting and heating.

Another way of ensuring that your plants remain at their best is to draw up a plan as to when you will plant seeds. If you are planning to grow salad greens such as lettuce, then early winter is a good time to start sowing seeds. Being aware of when you should begin growing each plant will allow you to ensure that it is properly planted and cared for. If you are a beginner, then stick to simple plants that are easy to maintain before moving onto more challenging plants. Growing plants that are delicate to handle may prove difficult if you have little or no experience of gardening. It is important to be aware of the requirements of each plant in order to keep it healthy throughout the year.

Planning an annual clean-out of your greenhouse will also help you to keep your plants at their best. A greenhouse can become quite cluttered throughout the year without regular clean-outs, so if you find yourself too busy to clean your greenhouse regularly, then plan an annual clean-out and remove all items before washing the greenhouse down. Removing weeds or dead plants will also help to keep your other plants healthy and reduce the risk of plant diseases. Also check your plants regularly for signs of damage by pests. If you do not yet have a greenhouse but are planning to install one in your garden, then you may wish to opt for a cedar wood greenhouse, which is rot resistant and contain natural oils that repel insects.
